1st Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony in the Garden
Fruit: Sorrow For Sin
Jesus came with them to Gethsemane. And He began to be saddened and exceedingly troubled. Then He said to them, “My soul is sad, even unto death. Wait here and watch with Me.” And going forward a little, He fell on the ground and began to pray “Father, if Thou art willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will but Thine be done.” And there appeared to Him an angel from heaven to strengthen Him. And falling into an agony He prayed the more earnestly. And His sweat became as drops of blood running down upon the ground. Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And He said, “Could you not, then, watch one hour with me? Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
2nd Sorrowful Mystery: The Scourging at the Pillar
Fruit: Purity
They bound Jesus and delivered Him to Pilate. And Pilate asked Him, “Art thou the king of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. But thou say-est it; I am a king.” “This is why I was born, and why I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth.”
Then Pilate said, “I find no guilt in this man. I will therefore chastise Him and release Him.” Pilate then took Jesus and had Him scourged. “Oppressed and condemned, He was taken away, a man of suffering. Though He was harshly treated, He submitted, like a lamb led to the slaughter. He was pierced for our offences, crushed for our sins. It was our infirmities that He bore, our sufferings, that He endured. Upon Him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by His stripes we are healed.”
3rd Sorrowful Mystery: The Crowning with Thorns
Fruit: Courage
Now the soldiers led Him away into the courtyard, and they stripped Him and put on Him a purple cloak. And plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on His head, and a reed into His right hand. And bending the knee before Him they mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they spat on Him, and took the reed and kept striking Him on the head.
Pilate again went outside and said, “I bring Him out to you, that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.” Jesus therefore came forth, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” But they cried out, “Away with Him! Crucify Him!” And Pilate said to them,“Why, what evil has He done?” But they kept crying out the more, “Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them: “Shall I crucify your king?” And the chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” Then Pilate handed Jesus over to them to be crucified. And so they took Him and led Him away.
4th Sorrowful Mystery: The Carrying of the Cross
Fruit: Patience
And bearing the cross for Himself, He went forth to the place called “The Skull”. And they laid hold of a certain Simon of Cyrene, and upon him they laid the cross to bear it after Jesus. Now there was following Him a great crowd of people, and of women, who were bewailing and lamenting Him. Jesus, turning to them, said, “Do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For if in the case of the green wood they do these things, what is to happen in the case of the dry?”
…
“Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me for I am meek, and humble of heart. And you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden light.”
…
“If anyone wishes to come after Me let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
5th Sorrowful Mystery: The Crucifixion
Fruit: Perseverance
And when they came to the place called “The Skull,” they crucified Him. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
And one of the robbers crucified with Him said, “Lord, remember me when Thou comest into Thy kingdom.” And Jesus said to him “Amen, I say to thee: this day thou shalt be with Me in paradise.”
And Jesus saw His mother and the disciple standing by, whom He loved. And He said to His mother, “Woman, behold thy son.” Then He said to His disciple, “Behold thy mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
And the sun was darkened, and the earth quaked, and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. And Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, “Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit.” And bowing His head, He expired.
