Sandon Cemetery

Each year on Saturday afternoon of the Christus Rex Pilgrimage, pilgrims pause at the humble and historic Sandon Cemetery, tucked away in the quiet countryside between Smeaton and Campbelltown. Here, we gather to pray for the faithful departed—particularly our deceased pilgrims and benefactors who once walked this road before us.
The cemetery, though small and largely hidden from public view, serves as a deeply significant spiritual moment on the journey. Pilgrims kneel or stand among the weathered headstones as prayers are offered for the holy souls in purgatory, reminding us that the Pilgrimage is not only a journey of the body, but a work of mercy for the soul.
This act of remembrance binds the living and the dead in charity and hope, and invites each pilgrim to reflect on the eternal nature of the Christian life. It is a quiet, solemn interlude—marked by prayer, silence, and a shared sense of gratitude for those who have gone before us.
Following the prayers, pilgrims enjoy afternoon tea in the parkland that surrounds the cemetery.
