St George’s Lake

Nestled within the Creswick Regional Park, St George’s Lake offers pilgrims a peaceful and picturesque resting point early on the first day of the Christus Rex Pilgrimage. Created in the 1890s to supply water for nearby gold mining operations, the lake is now a tranquil body of water surrounded by eucalypts and native bushland.
As pilgrims pause at St George’s Lake for morning tea, the water and the natural beauty of the surroundings provide a welcome moment of rest and reflection. The calm setting invites recollection—reminding us that the pilgrimage is not only about perseverance and penance, but also about gratitude, contemplation, and recognising God’s hand in creation.
This early stop is also a chance for pilgrims to rehydrate, care for their feet, and offer silent prayer before continuing the long walk ahead. For many, it marks the first moment of settling into the rhythm of the journey.
St George’s Lake is a new addition to the Pilgrimage route but has quickly become a beloved point, not just for its serenity, but for the opportunity to meet new people and settle for a comfortable lunch.
