Spiritual Preparation

Preparation

ust as our bodies must be ready for the long walk, our souls must also be prepared. The Christus Rex Pilgrimage is, at its heart, an act of devotion — a public witness of love for Christ the King and an opportunity to do penance, offer intentions, and draw closer to Our Lord.

Whether you are attending for the first time or returning once again, take time in the lead-up to prepare your heart for the days ahead.

Ways to Prepare Spiritually

1. Commit to Daily Prayer

Spend a few extra minutes each day in prayer, even if brief. The Rosary, daily Mass, spiritual reading, or time before the Blessed Sacrament are excellent ways to draw nearer to Christ before pilgrimage begins.

2. Pray the Novena to Christ the King

We encourage all pilgrims to pray the Novena to Christ the King in the nine days leading up to the pilgrimage. The novena can be found here or in your Pilgrim’s Handbook.

3. Read Quas Primas

Familiarise yourself with Quas Primas, the encyclical by Pope Pius XI that instituted the Feast of Christ the King in 1925. This short but powerful document sets out the purpose and majesty of Christ’s Kingship.

4. Make a List of Intentions

Consider writing down a list of people, needs, or causes to carry with you in prayer. These intentions can be silently offered with each step you take.

5. Prepare for Confession

If possible, attend Confession before the pilgrimage begins. While opportunities may be available on the route, it is best to begin with a clean soul and firm resolve.

Pilgrimage is a Penitential Act

The pilgrimage is not a holiday or retreat — it is a spiritual exercise. Offer your discomforts, sore feet, or bad weather in union with Our Lord’s suffering and for the good of souls.

“Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable.”
– 1 Corinthians 9:25
